Kendo in Newport News, VA
Kendo, the way of the sword, is a fast-paced modernized sword-based martial art, which is safe, yet exciting and a great art to develop oneself. It is rooted in the traditions of Budo, the martial way. There are no gender or physical barriers. It teaches the student to be calm in a threatening situation and develops confidence, self-discipline, and strength. A bamboo sword (Shinai) is used for sparring while wearing a safety armor (Bogu), and a wooden sword (Bokken) for forms (Kata). The bogu includes a helmet (Men), body armor (Do and Tare), and protective gloves for wrist and hands (Kote). The uniform is a jacket (Gi) and traditional Japanese trousers (Hakama), with no footwear.
At our dojo, we implement rules, regulations, and curriculum set by the FIK, and we are an active member of the SEUSKF, which is a regional federation under the AUSKF.
